Senator Arrested: NY State Senator Malcolm Smith Arrested for an Alleged Bribery -- Although registered as a democrat, Senator Malcolm Smith, 56 received an order of arrest along with five (5) other politicians for trying to bribe GOP higher ups to let him run for Mayor of New York city, as a "REPUBLICAN".
US Attorney Preet Bharara referred to the incident as an "unappetizing smorgasbord of graft and greed", to reveal New York's political culture.

Malcolm Smith served the NY state as majority and minority leader since he landed a spot in the senate in March 2000. Arrested with him was  Republican New York City Councilman Dan Halloran, 42, plus four (4) other politicians.

Bharara said, Smith promised to pay the sum of $80,000 in cash to Bronx County Republican Party Chairman Joseph Savino, 45, and Queens County Republican Party Vice Chairman Vincent Tabone, 46, all for the sake of allowing him to pose as a Democrat.

Senator Smith is hoping for a vindication though; His lawyer Gerald L. Shargel said:
Malcolm Smith is a dedicated public servant who has served both the state of New York and his constituents in an exemplary fashion ..He steadfastly denies the allegations that are contained in the complaint.
