Pres. Aquino Signs Law Declaring Ninoy's Birthday as Araw ng Pagbasa

President Benigno Aquino III signed a law declaring the birthday of his father, the late Senator Benigno "Ninoy" Aquino Jr. as "Araw ng Pagbasa" or Reading Day. It will be a regular working holiday and is elucidated in the Republic Act 10556.
The RA instructs the Department of Education (DepEd) to initiate reading sessions in the primary and secondary schools in the country on the 27th of November, which falls on a Wednesday.

The law was signed to promote reading and literacy, as well as uphold the vast arrays of Filipino heritage and culture.

Benigno Simeon "Ninoy" Aquino, Jr. was a former governor of Tarlac and later became a senator of the Republic of the Philippines.

Together with Gerry Roxas Jovito Salonga, Ninoy:
..formed the leadership of the opposition to the government of President Ferdinand Marcos. Shortly after the imposition of Martial Law, he was arrested in 1973 along with other dissidents and incarcerated for seven years.
Ninoy's assassination at the Manila International Airport in 1983 made a way for his wife, Corazon Aquino into the political arena. Ninoy was a Presidential Adviser on Defense Affairs from 1949–1954.
