According to Dr. Michael Walden, a professor of agricultural and resource economics at N.C. State University, cost of living varies significantly between states or countries. Under the said contention, cost of living indicators have the power to give you an insight on how much salary you should be having in order to achieve and go with the standard of living governing a city or country.

Note: Since we took the calculated figures from, it is noted therein that the indices are relative to New York City (NYC), hence it would mean that NYC is assumed as holding the index of 100, taken as constant. So, any city with say, 145 Groceries Index, means 45% more expensive than in NYC.

Consumer Price Excl. Rent Index (CPI)
..relative indicator of consumer goods price, including groceries, restaurants, transportation and utilities. CPI Index doesn't include accommodation expenses such as rent or mortgage.
Rent Index
..estimation of prices of renting apartments in the city compared to New York City.
Groceries Index
..estimation of grocery prices in the city compared to New York City. 
Restaurants Index
..comparison of prices of meals and drinks in restaurants and bars compared to NYC.
Local Purchasing Power  
..shows relative purchasing power in buying goods and services in a given city for the average wage in that city.
