Filipino artist accused of copying digital art of a Spanish painter, top prize and recognition recalled

Sometime in October last year, Mark Solis, a UP Student faced a photo plagiarism issue.

Fast to the Future by Christian Joy Trinidad

This time around, a painter named Christian Joy Trinidad is taking on the toll of 'copying' the digital artwork of Spanish graphic artist known as 'Nekro' on Facebook. Apparently, the reference image of the Pinoy painter is Nekro's work uploaded on digital art site / forum

Trinidad bagged the first prize amounting to P50,000 in the ASEAN-Philippines Painting Contest held to celebrate the 46th founding anniversary of the ASEAN.

The plagiarism alarm sounded over social media, when Facebook user Francis Estanislao posted a collage of images showing the works of Trinidad and that of Nekro.

Christian Joy Trinidad plagiarism over Nekro

The work of the Filipino painter is the one on the upper left corner with the label 'RIP-OFF', while Nekro's is at the bottom; The same background image can also be found in his Facebook page.

What Nekro wanted was for Trinidad to apologize.
I'm just asking him to accept the plagiarism (sic) and to be fair with the other contestants
Trinidad was interviewed by GMA News, and was aired on April 1. Here's what the painter said:
Hindi ko naman inaangkin yung image na ginawa kong reference. Ginawa ko syang totally na reference. Na-inspire ako sa kanya. Nilagyan ko sya ng ibang flavor, nagdagdag ako ng iba-ibang istorya
(I do not claim ownership of the image that I made as a reference. I was inspired by him. I put different flavors to his work.. added a different flavor.. and stories.)
While plagiarism issue is now having a lengthy discussion in Nekro's Facebook page, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) office on the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) revoked the top prize awarded to Christian Trinidad.

According to a DFA spokesperson, the contest judges wanted Trinidad to return the prize, including the Certificate of Excellence and issue and apology. (Source)
