Google celebrates marine biologist Rachel Carson's 107th birthday

Today marks the 107th birthday of marine biologist Rachel Carson.

Google joined the world in celebrating her natal day by dedicating a Doodle, as can be seen below:

Carson was known as a conservationist and is the author of at least three best-selling books about the ocean: The Sea Around Us, The Edge of the Sea and Under The Sea Wind.

Rachel was an active environmentalist. She started her career as a marine biologist in the US Bureau of Fisheries.

In the 1950s, she became a full time nature writer.

Rachel Carson was born in Springdale, Pennsylvania, US on May 27, 1907. She earned her college degree from Chatham University, then known as 'Pennsylvania College for Women'.

Among her subjects in writing are marine biology, ecology and pesticides. She died on April 14, 1964, in Maryland, US. She was 56.
