Metro Manila areas to have free Wi-Fi access, proposed by Sen. Recto

A bill seeking to provide free wireless Internet access for the public has been filed at the Senate by Senate President Pro Tempore Ralph Recto.

Free Wi-Fi Hotspots in Metro Manila

The said bill (Senate Bill 2232), named as 'Free Metro Manila Wifi Act of 2014' mandates the government to provide stable Internet connection in the public facilities such as buildings, parks and national roads.

According to Bill 2232, the followings areas should be provided with a stable broadband access:

  • All national and local government offices
  • Public health services and hospitals
  • Public elementary and high schools, and state colleges and universities
  • Ninoy Aquino International Airport (Terminals I, II, III and IV)
  • Public libraries
  • Tollways and expressways
  • Epifanio de los Santos Avenue (Edsa) and other national roads
  • Public transport terminals
  • Port of Manila; and
  • Rail transit stations (LRT Line 1, MRT Line 2, MRT Line 3, and PNR south rail)
Recto argued that providing free Internet access to the public in the mentioned areas, at least in the National Capital Region (NCR) for the initial implementation, would help in making the country's growing labor force updated with employment opportunities.

The free Wi-Fi hot spots in the NCR can put, even the low-income people online, to get into the tune of the 'progressive, and rapidly digitizing economy'. (Source)
