PAWS and EcoWaste warn public on the dangers of loom bands

Loom bands can be dangerous to pets and other animals, as well as infants and toddlers as they may be accidentally ingested.

Loom bands craze has been making rounds in almost every neighborhood these days. Kids and adults alike are into it already. But amid the growing fascination over the rubber band bracelets, certain dangers were highlighted by the Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) and EcoWaste Coalition.

The two groups released a joint warning saying, there have been reports from the veterinarians in the United States citing cases of 'intestinal obstruction among pet patients' due to ingested rubber bands.

The rubber bands inside the pets' stomach causes damages to their intestines, leading to loss of appetite, nausea and diarrhea.

PAWS executive director Anna Cabrera advised loom bands Filipino fans to keep in mind the dangers the rubber bands may bring.
As the rubber band bracelet craze hits the country, we urge fans to remember that these loom bands could spell danger for pets and should be handled with care to prevent pet injuries
Meanwhile, EcoWaste Coalition’s Thony Dizon reminded the public to beware of the fake loom bands circulating around. Aside from being unclear whether they contain toxic components or not, there is still no assurance that they are safe for consumers and the environment.
While we did not find lead and other toxic metals on the loom bands, there is no assurance that these products are totally safe for consumers and the environment as these products have no FDA market authorization
PAWS and EcoWaste Coalition shared the following precautionary measures:

1. Inform the kids about the importance of keeping the loom bands away from infants, toddlers and pets to avoid ingestion.

2. Do not let the pets play with the rubber bands.

3. Secure the rubber bands in safe places or covered containers.
