Cinemalaya 2014: Movies to watch from Aug. 1 to 10, 2014

This year's Cinemalaya was set to run from August 1 to 10, 2014, in selected cinemas in Metro Manila, including CCP, Greenbelt 3, Trinoma, Alabang Town Center and Fairview Terraces.

Here are the films / movies to watch at the Philippine Independent Film Festival 2014:


1. Hustisya

A foul-mouthed woman fights for her soul in the belly of the city.  Working for a human trafficking agency controlled by a powerful syndicate, she sees no evil, hears no evil.  In a society like ours, you have only two choices to be a victim, or a victimizer. She makes her choice.

Kasal is a slice of life drama of a gay couple whose resolve to stay together is challenged as they attend a wedding.  It also is an examination on how a gay couple navigates through the different institutions in Philippine society.

3. Asintado

4. Sundalong Kanin

7. Mariquina

Unlike the former Philippine First Lady, Imelda is indifferent towards shoes. To her, they are fraught with the bittersweet nostalgia of childhood, one that was marred by a difficult relationship with her shoe-maker father, Romeo.  Growing up, all of hers were handmade by him. Now a mature woman, she takes a pivotal call from the morgue, spurring her search for the perfect pair of shoes for her dead father.  The deeper she searches for the perfect shoes, the more she finds herself.

5. The Ordinary Things We Do

The Ordinary Things We Do features the story of six souls three couples and a celebration of one same love. 2. Indayog Ng Nayatamak

3. Nakabibinging Kadiliman

Life has been hard for siblings Jen and Amanda.  Amanda, the older of the two, is blind and works as a masseuse for a nearby establishment.  Jen, on the other hand, is deaf-mute and devotes her time caring for her blind sister. Though their set-up is tedious and difficult, the two still maintain a cheerful disposition and rely on each other greatly.  A new handsome neighbor moves in and the balance of the simple household is tipped. Jen experiences a surge of unknown feelings and doesn’t know how to handle it.  The relationship of the siblings is then put to a test and questions of dependency, jealousy and responsibility arise.

4. Ina-Tay

A beautician named Elvis (also known as Elvira) finds out one day that he has fathered a bouncing baby boy and is left with the challenge of single parenthood.  A lighthearted take on the Cebuano LGBT culture that fuses comedy and melodrama, to show that an independently-produced gay film doesn’t always have to be about discrimination and oppression.
