Magnitude 5.3 quake strikes Quezon provinces, Philippines

A magnitude 5.3 quake hit the provinces of Quezon, Metro Manila (Philippines) on Wednesday night, state weather bureau reported.

According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs), the earthquake struck areas near Jomalig island.

Tremors were felt in the following areas:

Intensity 3:
  • Quezon City
  • Mandaluyong City
  • Guinayangan
  • Quezon province
  • Gapan, Nueva Ecija
Intensity 2:
  • Sta. Rosa, Laguna
  • Tanza, Cavite; and
  • Makati City
The quake was shallow but tectonic in origin, hence felt stronger.

PHIVOLCS Director Renato Solidum told GMA News TV:
Hindi talaga sa Quezon Province ang epicenter kundi sa karagatan.
Hindi naman po ito ganoong kalakas, so wala po tayong inaasahang tsunami
Wala po silang dapat ipag-alala. Wala pong posibilidad (ng tsunami). Mahina lang po ito. Sa ganitong intensity, wala tayong inaasahang damages
