Weasel on a flying woodpecker’s back photographed, amazes netizens

This weasel, seemingly having the joyride of its life, on the back of a flying woodpecker is an incredible image to see.

weasel on woodpecker back

The amazing scene was photographed by Martin Le-May at Hornchurch Country Park in east London.

According to Le-May, he was out walking with his wife Ann on Monday afternoon when the strange opportunity took place.

Le-May told BBC News:
I heard a distressed squawking noise and feared the worst.
I soon realised it was a woodpecker with some kind of small mammal on its back."
I think we may have distracted the weasel as when the woodpecker landed it managed to escape and the weasel ran into the grass.
Netizens were astounded when the amateur photographer's picture surfaced on social media. It was retweeted several times.

Le-May had this Tweet on March 3, but without the weasel and the woodpecker:

However, the image was included in the Tweet posted by "Rare Bird Alert" a few hours ago.

Le-May was taken aback how the Internet reacted to his one of a kind photograph.

Wildlife presenter Steve Backshall from England said, weasels are fearless.

He said: "A female weasel weighs less than a Mars Bar but is as ferocious as a lion, so this is why the woodpecker would have been able to take off with it on its back."

"The weasel is pretty fascinating as well. It can kill things much bigger than itself, so it's an impressive little creature when you think about its size.", Backshall added.
