700 people might have died in Mediterranean shipwreck

Seven hundred people are feared dead when a fishing boat capsized off the coast of Libya on Sunday, UN refugee agency reported.

Mediterranean accident

According to UNHCR spokeswoman Carlotta Sami, only 28 people survived the Mediterranean maritime accident.

Maltese navy spokesman told AFP:
We have deployed our assets along with others from Italy and we are assisting in the rescue operation
Initial speculations say, this may be the biggest drowning disaster that has befallen the migrants trying to reach the European Union soils as migrants or asylum seekers.

"If confirmed, Sunday morning’s accident means that at least 1,500 migrants have died so far in 2015 while on route to Europe – at least 30 times higher than last year’s equivalent figure..", The Guardian said.

A week before, a couple of shipwrecks in the Mediterranean left around 450 people dead.
