A large fire engulfed the 19th-century basilica, leaving just a few scrap of its rooftop.

At least ninety firefighters, plus aircraft (Independent UK) were deployed to the area, but unfortunately more than three-quarters of the roof were consumed by the fire.

The blaze was declared under control after several hours.

People inside the building were quickly evacuated, said Father BenoƮt Bertrand of the Nantes diocese.

No injuries were reported, wrote The Guardian.

Meanwhile, the mayor of Nantes, Johanna Rolland lauded the crews of his city's emergency team for the "rapid and brave action".

Basilique Saint Donatien is a symbolic structure for the catholic community in the city.

It was built in the 19th century as dedication to saints Donatian and Rogatian.
