Google features Eiji Tsuburaya’s 114th Birthday

Eiji Tsuburaya is a Japanese movie special effects director. He is best known for bringing famous characters into life like Ultraman.

He is also the person responsible in bringing "Tokusatsu" to the global cinematic mainstream.

Literally, Tokusatsu means "special filming". It is a Japanese term referring to live-action film or television drama that uses "considerable" number of special effects.

The technique can be best seen in the recent Kaiju monster movies like Godzilla and Gamera. It is also employed in the superhero TV serials like  Kamen Rider and Metal Hero.

Tsurabaya had many years in the so-called "monster business". He even set up his own practical effects studio - Tsurabaya Productions.

Eiji was born in Sukagawa, Fukushima Prefecture, Japan on July 7, 1901. His children were Hajime Tsuburaya, Noboru Tsuburaya, Akira Tsuburaya.

He died on January 25, 1970.
