Philippine ferry capsizes, 36 dead, 21 missing

AP, WSJ, ABS-CBN News -- A Philippine ferry, M/B Kim Nirvana capsized off Ormoc city on Thursday, killing more than 36, reports said.

According to city official Soriaco Solibao, the boat capsized a kilometer from the pier.

The motorized water transport was carrying about 173 people. Nearby fishing boats and coast guard personnel were able to rescue at least 118.

As of the latest, 21 others are still missing.

Philippine Coast Guard spokesperson Balilo said, passengers may be trapped under the sunken boat.

Survivors said, the vessel was lashed by big strong waves then turned upside down very quickly.

"No one was able to jump out because it overturned very swiftly. There was no time to jump", Mary Jane Drake, who was traveling with her mother and American husband told The Associated Press.

M/B Kim Nirvana was bound for Camotes Island.
