New crustacean species discovered, named after Elton John

Dr James Thomas from the Halmos College of Natural Sciences and Oceanography, Florida named the newly found crustacean species after singer Sir Elton John.

While exploring the coral reefs of Raja Ampat in Indonesia, James and his colleagues found the said marine species living inside another specie as a host - in a "commensal association ", which means, it does not cause any harm or benefit to the host.

"So, when this unusual crustacean with a greatly enlarged appendage appeared under my microscope after a day of collecting, an image of the shoes Elton John wore as the Pinball Wizard came to mind", Dr. Thomas said.

He added, "I have listened to his music in my lab during my entire scientific career."

Hence, the new crustacean species - "L eltoni".

Crustacean species compose a large group of arthropods, such as crabs, lobsters, crayfish, shrimps and the like.
