Ethanol tanker cars derail in South Dakota, 1 catches fire

While no injuries were reported, at least one of the seven ethanol tanker cars caught fire when it got derailed in southeastern South Dakota, Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) Railroad said Saturday.

According to BNSF Railway spokesman Andy Williams, there were no nearby structures that were threatened by the said fire.

The 98-car train carrying ethanol derailed about 6:15 a.m. in the rural part of Bon Homme County, between the towns of Scotland and Lesterville, The Province wrote.

As of the latest, officials are still not sure what caused the derailment.

It's still too early to tell, said Williams. However, rest assured that an investigation will be following through, he added.

Environmental damages will also be assessed, the Spokesman told reporters.
