RIP former Senator Joker Arroyo

News lines had it that former Senator Joker Arroyo died on Wednesday at the age of 88. The cause of his death has not yet been officially declared.

The news was confirmed by several sources, one of which is the Twitter post of Senator Sonny Angara this morning at around 8:31 a.m.

"RIP ex Senator Joker Arroyo, Dios Mabalos," Angara said.

Joker Arroyo was a human rights lawyer and freedom fighter. He spent three-term as congressman of the 1st District of Makati from 1992 to 1998. He became a senator in 2001 and held the post for 12 years.

In his biography posted on the official website of the Senate, Arroyo is said to have remained an independent throughout his term. "He never traveled abroad on government money and was known to have a perfect attendance record for nine years from the time he was elected up to the end of his term.", the website stated.

Arroyo served as the "lead prosecutor during the impeachment trial of President Joseph Estrada, he was remarkable," the website added.

Arroyo is survived by wife Felicitas Aquino.

On Twitter, the hashtag "Joker Arroyo" trended on Wednesday morning; Netizens expressed their sadness over the death of the veteran public servant.

"Rest In Peace to the Pride of Baao, Camarines Sur, the Pride of Bicol, and the Philippines.", commented Julienne Kate V. Julianes on Facebook.

Vice President Jejomar Binay also expressed his sorrow over death of his close friend.

"Joker played a big role in rebuilding the nation from the ashes of the dictatorship. And he also helped rebuild Makati from a debt-ridden municipality to a model of public service and pro-poor governance," Binay said (Rappler).
